Student Family Reunification Frequently Asked Questions

What is family reunification?

The RASD Family Reunification Plan is designed to address how students will be safely reunified with their family members. The RASD Family Reunification Plan has been developed to enable RASD schools and first responders to efficiently and safely integrate students and family members as required, during emergency response and recovery. The model is consistent with the Fond du Lac County Emergency Operations Plan and with Incident Command System as required by the National Incident Management System.

What is happening to my son / daughter?

Students will be brought to the reunification location by bus. Students will be signed in on a sign in log. They will be given a yellow wristband to place on their wrist and placed in a secure location that is guarded by law enforcement. Students who have access / functional needs will also be given a red wristband and they may be placed in a different location within reunification location dependent on need. Students and staff will be pat searched after violent incidents. Students will sit and wait until proper parent or guardian arrives.

What does the parent / guardians need to do when arriving to Family Reunification Center?

Parent / guardian will need proper identification, i.e. driver’s license, etc. Parent / guardians will be signed in and in violent incidents, pat searched. Parent / guardians will be given a green wristband and asked to patiently wait until their student(s) become available.

How long will the process take?

Student accountability and safety is our number one concern. The process of ensuring students leaves with a proper parent or guardian is of imperative importance. Time will vary dependent on the number of students. We estimate the process will take at least 4 hours until the final students are reunified.

If my son / daughter are 18 or older what should they do?

Motor vehicles should be left at the school. Students trying to leave in vehicles will create traffic jams and slow first responders getting to the scene. Students should follow staff directions and utilize provided transportation.

What is the role of the school?

The school will have many roles during an incident. Main focus will be on getting students to parents / guardians as quick as possible. Crisis counseling issues will be addressed as needed.

Can I call or email the school to ask for changes in who can pick up my child from the reunification site?

No. During the reunification process, the school district will not accept phone calls or emails asking to release a student to anyone other than who is listed in Infinite Campus. It is the parent’s responsibility to keep this information up to date and accurate in Infinite Campus at all times.

How can I get up to date public information?

Information will be essential to assist you in maintaining situational awareness. The school will utilize the district website, email, news outlets and its Infinite Campus Messenger system used during day to day activities.

What is the role of first responders?

Life safety is their number one concern. Their role is to maintain order and health within the reunification area.

Why are Parents / guardian, students, and staff being pat searched / wearing a wristband?

Safety of everyone within the reunification area is our goal. Everyone will be pat searched to ensure no one is injured and no weapons are brought into the reunification area after a violent incident. Wristbands assist staff in maintaining accountability and ensuring everyone has been signed in.
